What is VAHAN?
VAHAN (full form: Vehicle Registration) is the Government of India's national vehicle registry, managed by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways (MoRTH) through the National Informatics Centre (NIC). It is the central database that stores RC (Registration Certificate) records for every motor vehicle registered in India - cars, bikes, trucks, buses, and all commercial vehicles.
VAHAN is accessible online at vahan.parivahan.gov.in and through the mParivahan mobile app. It is the authoritative source of truth for vehicle ownership and compliance in India. Insurance companies, RTOs, traffic police, and courts all rely on VAHAN data for verification.
The current version, VAHAN 4.0, was launched in 2019. It introduced real-time national coverage across all 36 states and union territories, API access for authorised third parties (insurance companies, banks, NBFC, etc.), integration with FASTag (NETC) data, and real-time insurance and PUC updates from insurers and PUC centres.

Method 3: Via mParivahan App
- 1Open the mParivahan app
- 2Tap 'Vehicle Search' from the home screen
- 3Enter the vehicle registration number
- 4Tap 'Search' - results load from VAHAN in real time
VAHAN data for chassis number and engine number is partially masked for privacy. The full numbers are available only to RTOs, police, and authorised agencies. If you need full chassis/engine numbers for a legal purpose, contact the registered RTO with your identification and reason.
