FASTag Recharge, Balance Check and Status - All Methods

Low balance is the single most common reason a FASTag gets blacklisted at a toll plaza. This guide covers every way to recharge - the issuing bank's app, UPI apps like PhonePe and Paytm, the NHAI OneTouch app, and auto-recharge - plus how to check your balance and what to do when a recharge fails.

Why Balance Matters So Much

FASTag is a prepaid wallet, not a debit card - money in your bank account does not flow into it automatically. If the wallet balance drops below the issuer's minimum threshold, the tag is flagged and then blacklisted, which means the cash lane and double toll at the next plaza. Regular highway users should keep a healthy buffer; occasional users should at minimum check the balance before any long trip. If your tag is already blocked, start with the blacklisted FASTag fix guide.

The Four Main Recharge Methods

1. Issuing bank app or net banking

The most direct route. Log in to the issuing bank's app - SBI YONO, HDFC Bank, ICICI iMobile, Axis Mobile, Paytm and so on - open the FASTag section, enter the amount, and pay. The balance updates instantly. Minimum recharge is typically Rs 100, and the wallet ceiling depends on your KYC tier - see the FASTag KYC guide.

2. UPI apps - PhonePe, Google Pay, Paytm

Every issuer provides a FASTag VPA in the format vehicle-number@bankname; pay to it from any UPI app, or use the dedicated FASTag recharge sections inside PhonePe, Paytm, Google Pay, or Amazon Pay. These are routed via BBPS and usually reflect within 5-15 minutes. Double-check the vehicle number - paying the wrong VPA credits someone else's tag, and reversals take days.

3. NHAI OneTouch app

NHAI's official app supports recharge for FASTags from all major issuing banks - handy when you are unsure which bank issued your tag or manage multiple vehicles.

4. Auto-recharge

The set-and-forget option: link the wallet to your bank account and set a threshold and top-up amount, so the tag refills itself before it can run dry. It runs on a NACH or UPI mandate you can modify or cancel anytime - just keep funds in the linked account.

Checking Your Balance and Status

When a Recharge Fails

If money was deducted but the balance has not updated within 30 minutes, check the bank statement: a Success status means you should contact the FASTag issuing bank - not the payment app - with the transaction reference number; credit or refund follows in 3-5 working days. A Pending status usually auto-reverses within a business day. Only ever recharge through official channels - bank apps, verified VPAs, NHAI OneTouch, or BBPS platforms - and never via QR codes or links shared on WhatsApp. For everything else about tags and tolls, see the complete FASTag guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum FASTag recharge amount?

Most issuing banks and apps accept a minimum recharge of Rs 100, though some channels set it at Rs 200-250. The wallet ceiling depends on your KYC tier - Rs 10,000 for minimum KYC and Rs 1 lakh for full KYC accounts.

How long does a FASTag recharge take to reflect?

Recharges through the issuing bank's own app or net banking update in real time. Third-party UPI apps like PhonePe and Paytm typically reflect within 5-15 minutes via BBPS. If nothing shows after an hour, contact the issuing bank with the transaction reference number.

Can I recharge FASTag through PhonePe or Paytm?

Yes. Both apps have dedicated FASTag recharge sections - enter the vehicle number, select the issuing bank, enter the amount, and pay via UPI. Google Pay and Amazon Pay support it too under their bills sections.

Can I recharge someone else's FASTag?

Yes. The payer does not need to be the account holder - any FASTag can be recharged by entering its vehicle number or FASTag VPA from any UPI app. This is handy for topping up a spouse's or employee's vehicle.

My recharge was deducted but the balance did not update. What do I do?

Check your bank statement first. If it shows Success, note the transaction reference number and contact the FASTag issuing bank's customer care - the credit or refund is processed in 3-5 working days. If it shows Pending, wait 24 hours for the automatic reversal.

How do I set up FASTag auto-recharge?

In the issuing bank's FASTag portal or app, open Auto Recharge or Standing Instructions, link your bank account, set the trigger threshold and top-up amount, and confirm with OTP. The mandate can be modified or cancelled anytime, and it only works while the linked account has funds.
