What Is on a Vehicle RC - Every Field Explained

The Registration Certificate (RC) is the most important document for any vehicle in India - the legal proof of registration and ownership. This guide walks through every field on the RC, from the registration number format to hypothecation and fitness validity, and flags what to verify carefully before buying a used vehicle.

Registration Number and Owner Details

The registration number is unique to the vehicle and follows the format State Code + RTO District Code + Series + Number. MH02CD5678, for example, means Maharashtra (MH), Mumbai RTO 02, series CD, number 5678. The owner name on the RC is the legally registered owner. For a car bought on loan, this is the buyer's name, not the bank's - the lender appears separately under Hypothecation. If the RC shows a different name than the person selling the car, do not proceed without a clear explanation.

Vehicle Specifications - What to Verify

The RC records the make and model, vehicle class (LMV, MCWG, HMV and so on), fuel type, engine number, chassis number (VIN), colour, and year of manufacture. When buying used, physically match the engine and chassis numbers on the RC against those stamped on the vehicle itself. A mismatch means the RC and the vehicle do not belong together - a serious fraud indicator that can point to a rebadged stolen vehicle.

Validity, Fitness, and the Loan Field

Registration validity

Private vehicles get a 15-year initial registration; after that it must be renewed. Commercial and transport vehicles additionally need a fitness certificate renewed annually, which shows as Fitness Validity on the record.

Hypothecation

If the vehicle was financed, the RC shows 'Hypothecated to [Bank/NBFC]', meaning the lender has a claim until the loan is repaid. After closure, the owner must apply with a bank NOC and Form 35 to remove the entry - see the hypothecation removal guide. Until then the lender's name stays on the RC, even years after the loan is cleared.

Fields Visible Only on the Online RC Check

The physical smart card carries static registration data. The online record adds live compliance status:

You can pull this full record for any vehicle in seconds - see how to check RC details online or run a lookup on the RC search tool.

Smart Card, Booklet, and Digital RC

Older vehicles carry an RC booklet while newer ones get a smart card; both are legally valid. The digital RC in DigiLocker has equal legal validity under the IT Act and is accepted by traffic police. If your RC is lost or damaged, follow the duplicate RC process at the RTO. Before any purchase, cross-check every field using the used car buying guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is the RC smart card the same as the RC booklet?

They carry the same information in different forms. Older vehicles have a paper RC booklet while newer registrations get a credit-card-sized smart card. Both are legally valid documents issued by the RTO.

Can I use the digital RC in DigiLocker instead of the physical card?

Yes. The DigiLocker digital RC has the same legal validity as the physical card under the IT Act and is accepted by traffic police and insurers. For RTO transactions like an ownership transfer, carry the original physical RC as well.

What does the hypothecation field on an RC mean?

It means the vehicle was purchased with a loan and the lender named there has a financial claim until the loan is repaid. After repayment, the owner must apply to the RTO with the bank NOC and Form 35 to remove the entry.

How long is a vehicle registration valid in India?

For private non-transport vehicles, the initial registration is valid for 15 years from first registration, after which it must be renewed. Commercial vehicles additionally need an annual fitness certificate shown as Fitness Validity.

Why do some RC fields show 'NA' in the online check?

'NA' usually means that field was never digitised when the vehicle was registered or the RTO has not uploaded it to the central VAHAN system - common for older, pre-digitisation registrations. The physical RC remains the authoritative document in such cases.
