Servicing at an unauthorized garage during the warranty period voids the manufacturer's warranty. The warranty terms require all services to be done at authorized service centres to remain valid. After warranty expiry, you can choose any garage.
Free services are typically included with new cars: Maruti offers 3 free services, Hyundai offers 3, Honda offers 3, and Tata offers 3. These are fully covered at authorized centres and must be claimed within the specified km/time limits - unused free services lapse and cannot be redeemed later.
A complete, uninterrupted service history at authorized centres typically adds ₹30,000–80,000 to a used car's resale value (depending on car age and segment). Buyers are willing to pay a premium because it reduces their uncertainty about the car's mechanical condition.

How to Maintain a Complete Service History
Follow the manufacturer's service schedule
Every car comes with a service manual specifying service intervals - typically every 10,000 km or 12 months (whichever comes first) for most petrol cars. Diesel cars often have 15,000 km intervals. Never skip a service; even a delayed service breaks the chain and reduces resale appeal.
Always use authorized service centres
Only authorized service centres (Maruti Nexa, Hyundai, Tata Authorized) can stamp your service booklet in a way that is recognized for warranty claims and resale. Multi-brand garages (GoMechanic, MyTVS) are cheaper but do not count for warranty service history.
Keep all invoices - physical and digital
The service booklet stamp is the primary record, but job cards and invoices with part numbers and labour descriptions are your backup proof. Store all service invoices in the car's document folder. Many service centres now also email digital invoices - save them in a dedicated folder.
Register on the manufacturer's app

Buyers check when the next service is due. If your car is 500–1,000 km away from the next service milestone, get it serviced before listing - it's a positive signal and eliminates it as a negotiation point.
